Foreigners Fly out of Thailand

ZHANG: At least for hundreds of tourists stranded in Bangkok, there was some relief. They were able to return home today as commercial airlines made flights from a naval airbase. STORY: Tourists rushed to U-Tapao airport, 140 kilometers southeast of Bangkok, after they were contacted by the airlines. Most of the tourists have been stuck in Bangkok since Tuesday. A blockade by anti-government protestors at Bangkoks major airport caused the cancellation of all flights leaving thousands of tourists stranded in the Thai capital. The situation at the substitute airport was chaotic as scores of tourists, tried to cut the queues in order to get on a flight. Some passengers had to wait outside the one-storey terminal, which was already packed with passengers. Many tourists were angry over the disruption of flights caused by the protest at the airport but some expressed understanding and say that they will return to Thailand. [Ian Gonsal, Australian Tourist]: "These things happen so we will get through it. It'll be just fine. I'm sure, and I'm sure Thailand will get through it too." [David Caudle, American Businessman]: "No, I'll be back. I'll be back, this is just a small hiccup. Well I just feel bad for Thailand. I mean maybe many people won't come now and it's unfair but I hope they'll continue to come to Thailand and visit." The small U-Tapao airport previously handled 14 chartered flights a day. Now its up to 57.
